Introduction and Uses of Calcium Carbonate
Calcium carbonate is commonly used today as a nutritional supplements for people not getting enough calcium in their normal diet. It is important to know that this is not all it is used for. It has many uses in many day to day items that we all use with out think about what they are made from. Calcium Carbonate has many pharmacy uses and is recommended for people with calcium deficiencies. It is also added to swimming pools to offset the the pH levels in disinfectant agents. It balances the level of pH so that the water is safe to swim in. Calcium Carbonate also has a wide variety of industrial applications. In the construction industry is is used in building materials and is a major ingredient in cement. Due to acid rain Calcium Carbonate is not uses in building materials in its lime stone form anymore. The lime stone can not with stand acid rain and therefore is no longer used in building. Calcium Carbonate is also used in the purification of iron from iron ore. In the oil industry it is added to drilling fluid to increase the density of the drilling fluid. It is an essential ingredient in the production of babies dippers. It has recently been used in paper making and in North America has begun to replace kaolin in the production of glossy paper as well. Calcium Carbonate is added to a wide variety of paints, adhesives, sealants, and chalk or marble based products. As you can see Calcium Carbonate has many more uses than one might expect.
