The History of Calcium Carbonate
The vikings used Calcium Carbonate in the 800's BC. They used it as chalk to whiten their faces. At this time it was mainly used as a paint or in building materials. It had very similar uses to the ways it is used to today. Although it had not yet been properly named and people did not know it could be used at a supplement. It is hard to say when Calcium Carbonate first came into use but many cultures have used the compound through out history in the form of lime stone. Ancient Egyptians and early Greeks used mortar ,a cement like material in their buildings. The Calcium Carbonate allowed for a stronger bond and helped these early groups create beautiful lasting structures. Humphry Davy prepared the pure form of Calcium in 1808 by pasting a electric currant through melted calcium chloride.
Humphry Davy lived from 1788 through 1829 and was a major contributor to the field of elctrochemistry. He also discovered sodium, potassium, and magnesium, strontium, and barium. Humpry Davy was not know for being a great student, but he loved reading and especially reading about science. He grew up in Cornwall, England. His early life was very difficult; his family was every poor and his father died when he was very young. He was not expected to go far because his family was poor and he lacked interest in most of his classes. His love of science pushed him forward and he became one of the most respected scientists in history because of his discoveries.
